GRAND STAND–LAS graduating class of 2020 with seniors in the bleachers to follow social distancing guidelines during. The unique outdoor commencement program was held on Thursday, June 11, 2020. Each graduate was provided up to eight tickets for family to attend.

After finalizing plans for an outdoor  graduation ceremony for L’Anse Area School (LAS) graduating class of 2020 , forty-five seniors walked onto Volunteer Field to receive their diplomas. The graduation ceremony was held on June 11, 2020 at 7 p.m. amidst sun and  a brisk breeze, with each graduate inviting up to eight guests to the celebration with  social distancing guidelines in place. FAMILIES CELEBRATE–Sacred Heart School families celebrated completion of Young 5 and kindergarten graduation with a special program on Saturday, June 6, 2020. Families drove up to the school and stayed at their vehicles as the students received diplomas. Photos by Carrie Rich.

The drive-up ceremony took place on Saturday, June 6, 2020. Receiving diplomas for kindergarten graduation were Caleb Callejas, Thomas Carmody, Blaise Hoehn and Wllie Weijola. Completing Young 5 were Alivia Brennan, Madison Griffin, Darylyn  Marinich, Braylon Simonsen and Tei Scott. Baraga celebrates unique outdoor graduation

In a unique commencement ceremony Friday, May 29, 2020, Baraga’s graduates stepped into their future before a small crowd of family social distancing outside on the football field. Twenty graduates paraded through town and then around the track at the field as family vehicles entered from the west end of the field (near the locker room) and parked on the field. Meyers seeks withdrawal of murder plea

Judge Tim Brennan will consider a motion to withdraw a plea in the murder case of Genevieve Lynn Meyers. The matter was scheduled remotely in Baraga County Circuit Court via Zoom on Tuesday, May 19, 2020. Brennan set aside an hour for consideration of the motion, although there is no time limit in court. Regs easing; construction resumes

ON THE JOB—General Contractor Dave Whitman hikes a ladder to the scaffold on a roof job last Thursday. Contractors were allowed to resume work after weeks of shutdown because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Regulations are being slowly eased as various operations resume with social distancing and safety guidelines in place.

Local contractors were able to resume work last week as restrictions placed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to help slow the spread of COVID-19 were eased. How do you convert sheltering-in into a teachable moment? It’s a problem teachers across Baraga County are stumping to solve. Charged with teaching remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic which closed Michigan schools March 13, teachers are employing a full arsenal of learning tools to help get their lessons across. Chromebooks, chat rooms, learning packets and more are being employed by resourceful educators. Students are tuning in or responding in print if their homes aren’t online, learning the three R’s like no generation before them. SVdP food pantry ready to help

PACKING ORDER–With new social distancing measures in place, St. Vincent’s L’Anse food pantry is opento help anyone who needs food. L-r, volunteers Janet Hagbloom and Carolyn Pasternak fill the cart with an order. The public remains in vehicles outside and food is carted to them. They fill out a food order to receive the items they need. The pantry is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1-3 p.m.

Volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry in L’Anse want people in need to know they’re there for them. It’s not quite “business as usual” due to social distancing during the virus threat, but the pantry is serving folks needing food or assistance three days a week—and more in emergencies. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-21 went into effect on March 24, 2020 at 12:01 a.m. That put the brakes on non-essential businesses in an attempt to slow the spread of Coronavirus. L’Anse company machining ventilator parts

JOINING THE FIGHT—L’Anse Manufacturing, Inc. is working to help save lives in the Coronavirus pandemic by machining two components for ventilators. Master Machinist Brian Rantanen is machining a part on a Haas 5 Axis CNC Milling Center. LMI is running the ventilator parts around the clock. They come in as rough castings from a foundry in Dayton, OH.

Machining precision parts for medical equipment is nothing new to L’Anse Manufacturing, Inc. (LMI). The company machines precise parts from castings for a wide variety of applications from medical to automotive to aviation. These days the mission is more important than ever. L’Anse Manufacturing had been  machining about 250 parts for medical ventilators a year for a new customer who has worked with LMI for about a year and a half.
