Pregnancy loss, a frightening NICU stay or a child’s serious illness can leave families navigating grief and uncertainty in profound isolation. After enduring such a loss themselves, one local family is turning its heartbreak into hope by building a compassionate circle of support for others traveling similarly difficult paths. More than 100 people gathered at the Drive-In in Baraga this past weekend for Harlan’s Walk, a heartfelt community event created by Rebecca and Jordan Maki to honor their son, Harlan, and to stand beside families affected by pregnancy and child loss, NICU stays and childhood illness. The walk was held Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, shortly before what would have been Harlan’s due date. Participants walked together in matching shirts made by Laird Hat Co. to Jetti’s Coffee, where hot chocolate was provided and Rebecca shared closing remarks about grief, gratitude and the importance of community support.
